I have known for some time that stories of a great flood are nearly universal in the handed-down history of people all over the world. It has always seemed strange that there isn’t more of an effort to understand why this is. Do humans just instinctively like to make up stories about great floods? Did something actually happen a long time ago? This article argues that a comet caused a catastrophe that may have wiped out up to 80 percent of the world’s population about 5,000 years ago and that this is what people all over the world have remembered in one way or another.
